🌎 How to deal with other people's opinions about your appearance

In this text, I will talk about the best way to deal with other people's opinions about your appearance and how this impacts your personal style.

I am Nycka Nunes, a visual artist and personal style consultant. I have worked in the fashion industry since 1981. I am the most experienced style consultant in Brazil and one of the most experienced in the world in this field. I work with personal image as a nonverbal communication tool.

Personal image is a nonverbal communication tool. You can read other texts of mine explaining this better. 

Those who say that you have to completely ignore other people's opinions about your appearance are wrong, and they act this way because of a fixed mindset that refuses to learn from experiences. Or they have very low self-esteem and want yours to be equally low, so they don't encourage you to improve.

Other people's opinions and how you feel about each of them say a lot about you and what is important to you. Please note carefully that I said how you “feel” each of them, not how you react to them. Pretending that you don’t care about your boyfriend/girlfriend or husband/wife’s opinion is pathetic, because if you chose this person as your partner, you do care about their opinion of you. Likewise, there are other people whose opinions about your appearance are relevant. And you realize this when someone’s opinion affects you. If you read my post about how to choose the color of your shirt, for example, and feel like you’re doing something wrong, it’s because my opinion is relevant and you recognize my expertise. It doesn’t matter if you express what you felt or not. It doesn’t matter if you react or not. Self-knowledge to identify these clues that your emotions give is important to know when your brain and heart are asking for changes and qualified professional guidance.

Therefore, personal style necessarily requires a dose of self-knowledge and emotional maturity. Emotionally immature people don’t accept the signs that their own body sends that they need to improve. And people without self-knowledge don’t understand these signs. You can choose to ignore this and think anything is style, or you can understand that my standards are high and there is certainly a hierarchy when it comes to personal style, which is expressed by your choices regarding appearance, and my standards are at the top of the pyramid. Neste texto vou falar sobre a melhor forma de lidar com as opiniões dos outros sobre sua aparência e como isso impacta seu estilo pessoal.

Eu sou Nycka Nunes, artista visual e consultora de estilo pessoal. Trabalho na indústria de moda desde 1981, sou a consultora de estilo mais experiente do Brasil e uma das mais experientes do mundo em atividade e trabalho com a imagem pessoal como ferramenta de comunicação não verbal.

A imagem pessoal é uma ferramenta de comunicação não verbal. Você pode ler outros textos meus explicando isso melhor.

Quem diz que você tem de ignorar totalmente a opinião dos outros em relação a isso à sua aparência está errado, e age assim motivado por uma mentalidade fixa, que se recusa a aprender com as experiências. Ou eles têm uma péssima autoestima e querem que a sua seja igualmente baixa, e por isso não te encorajam a melhorar.

A opinião dos outros e como você sente cada uma delas diz muito sobre você e o que é importante para você. Observe atentamente que eu disse como você “sente" cada uma delas, e não como reage a elas. Fingir que não liga para a opinião do seu namorado/namorada ou esposo/esposa é patético, porque, se você escolheu essa pessoa como sua parceira você se importa, sim, com a opinião dela a seu respeito. Da mesma forma, existem outras pessoas cujas opiniões sobre sua aparência são relevantes. E você percebe isso quando a opinião de alguém te afeta. Se você lê meu post sobre como escolher a cor da camisa, por exemplo, e sente que está fazendo algo errado, é porque minha opinião é relevante e você reconhece minha expertise. Não importa se você expressa o que sentiu ou não. Não importa se você reage ou não. O autoconhecimento para identificar essas pistas que suas emoções dão é importante para saber quando seu cérebro e seu coração estão pedindo por mudanças e orientação profissional qualificada.

Por isso, estilo pessoal requer, obrigatoriamente, uma dose de autoconhecimento e maturidade emocional. Pessoas emocionalmente imaturas não aceitam os sinais que o próprio corpo envia de que elas precisam de melhorar. E pessoas sem autoconhecimento não entendem esses sinais. Você pode escolher ignorar isso e achar que qualquer coisa é estilo, ou entender que meus padrões são altos e certamente existe uma hierarquia quando o assunto é estilo pessoal, que é expressa por suas escolhas referentes à aparência, e os meus padrões estão no topo da pirâmide. 3. I am an artist in everything I do, so I never think about following a ready-made recipe, something close to impossible to less experienced professionals. I always seek to take care of each client's image individually and I am excellent at doing this.

How to choose tailored clothes to have the perfect fit? That's what we're going to talk about in this text.

I'm Nycka Nunes, a visual artist and personal style consultant/stylist. I've been working in the fashion industry since 1981, and I'm the most experienced stylist in Brazil and possibly one of the most experienced in the world. I have my own work methodology and I serve men and women from all over the world. I work mainly with luxury and high-end brands. I avoid cheap brands and fast fashion because they usually only offer crap without any sign of personality.

Before getting to the main topic of the text, I should explain the importance of well-fitting pieces for developing your personal style and the impact this has on your personal brand.

Your appearance is a nonverbal communication tool. It says a lot about your self-esteem, your personality, etc. Only a stylist with my expertise can help you accurately translate the best features of your personality into your clothing, hair and makeup choices. Knowing how to convey the best aspects of your personality through your appearance is a way to reinforce your personal brand, attracting people who are interested in people like you.

Most people don't know how to make a shirt. Unfortunately, I've seen seamstresses who don't know how to sew! And it's exactly this type of seamstress who works for cheap brands. And one of the important characteristics to define whether a garment has a perfect fit is knowing how to sew and make patterns. That's why we see some celebrities wearing clothes with very questionable fit. They hire stylists without these qualifications and the result is embarrassing, but because they are famous, the most ignorant people don't always notice the mistakes, no matter how grotesque they are. They think that everything famous people wear is beautiful and imitate them.

If not everyone notices mistakes, what reason would you have to worry about them? The search for excellence. Winning the applause of fools is easy. It is much better to win the admiration of those who are accustomed to high standards. A person accustomed to perfectly fitting, high-quality clothes can easily identify someone who buys cheap, poorly cut, inappropriately sized, vulgar clothes. No style trick will make someone who has made these choices look elegant in the eyes of someone who knows what it means to have a well-defined personal style and good-quality clothes, in the right size, made of quality materials, etc.

The right fit is a mathematical and strategic calculation. You need to know the ideal measurements to generate the desired impact, not just the ideal measurements for each seam to be in the right place. Let's remember that personal image is a nonverbal communication tool. A few years ago, I participated in a report for a local TV station to talk about belts. And one of the people who was walking around the store where the report was filmed was a very pretty, thin young woman who was wearing a blouse with an elastic hem and very loose from there on, completely hiding her waist. I invited her to participate in the report and suggested that she wear a strapless denim top with a corset structure and two very thin belts in bright colors (neon) to highlight her waist. The change was significant. Shapes, textures and colors speak volumes.

Como escolher roupas de alfaiataria para ter o caimento perfeito? É sobre isso que vamos falar neste texto.

Eu sou Nycka Nunes, sou artista visual e consultora de estilo pessoal/stylist. Trabalho na indústria de moda desde 1981, sendo a stylist mais experiente do Brasil e possivelmente uma das mais experientes do mundo em atividade. Tenho metodologia de trabalho própria e atendo homens e mulheres de todo o mundo. Trabalho principalmente com marcas de luxo e alto padrão. Evito marcas baratas e fast fashion porque geralmente só oferecem porcaria sem qualquer sinal de personalidade.

Antes de ir ao tema principal do texto, devo explicar a importância de peças com bom caimento para o desenvolvimento de seu estilo pessoal e o impacto disso em sua marca pessoal.

Sua aparência é uma ferramenta de comunicação não verbal. Ela diz muito sobre sua autoestima, sua personalidade, etc. Apenas uma stylist com minha expertise pode te ajudar a traduzir com precisão as melhores características de sua personalidade em suas escolhas de vestuário, cabelos e maquiagem. E saber transmitir as melhores características de sua personalidade através de sua aparência é uma forma de reforçar sua marca pessoal, atraindo pessoas que se interessem por pessoas como você.

A maioria das pessoas não sabe fazer uma camisa. Infelizmente, já vi costureiras que não sabem costurar! E é exatamente esse tipo de costureira que trabalha em marcas baratas. E uma das características importantes para definir se uma roupa tem um caimento perfeito é saber costurar e fazer moldes. Por isso vemos algumas celebridades usando roupas com caimento de gosto muito duvidoso por aí. Contratam stylists sem essas qualificações e o resultado é uma vergonha, mas, por serem famosos, as pessoas mais ignorantes nem sempre percebem os erros, por mais grotescos que sejam. Acham que tudo que famosos vestem é lindo e imitam.

Se nem todo mundo percebe erros, que motivo você teria pra se preocupar com eles? A busca por excelência. Ter o aplauso dos tolos é fácil. É muito melhor conquistar a admiração de quem está habituado a padrões elevados. Uma pessoa acostumada a roupas de caimento perfeito e alta qualidade identifica facilmente quem compra roupas baratas, mal cortadas, de tamanhos inadequados, vulgares. Nenhum truque de estilo vai fazer alguém que fez essas escolhas parecer elegante aos olhos de quem sabe o que é ter um estilo pessoal bem definido e roupas de boa qualidade, no tamanho correto, materiais de qualidade, etc.

O caimento correto é um cálculo matemático e estratégico. É preciso saber as medidas ideais para gerar o impacto desejado, não só as medidas ideais para cada costura estar no lugar certo. Lembremos que a imagem pessoal é uma ferramenta de comunicação não verbal. Há alguns anos fiz uma participação numa reportagem para uma TV local, para falarmos de cintos. E uma das pessoas que estava circulando na loja onde a reportagem foi gravada era uma jovem muito bonita, magra, que estava usando uma blusa com elástico na barra e bem folgada dali para cima, escondendo totalmente sua cintura. Convidei-a para participar da reportagem e sugeri que vestisse um top jeans sem alças, com estrutura de corpete, e dois cintos bem finos de cores fortes (neon) destacando a cintura. A mudança foi significativa. Formas, texturas e cores falam muito.

If you always opt for neutral colors, this shows insecurity and lack of personality. Your personal image is a nonverbal communication tool, and to develop a relevant style you need to have the guidance of an experienced professional like me who deeply understands personal style as a nonverbal communication tool, helping you translate the best of your personality into your appearance.

The shirt is a piece worn close to the face and has a strong impact on your personal image, as the wrong color choice can make you look worn, among other equally negative options. Therefore, it, and any piece worn close to the face, should be the first to define the color, and only then will we define which colors to use in the other pieces and accessories to make the desired impact.

Developing your personal style as a nonverbal communication tool requires strategic thinking. It is not enough to avoid mistakes. Avoiding mistakes is the least that anyone with a minimum of aesthetic sense and a mirror at home has an obligation to do for themselves. I don't blame you for not knowing this. Living in environments with people who do not appreciate art can be fatal for the development of aesthetic sense. But now that you know my work, choosing to continue repeating mistakes instead of counting on qualified professional guidance is a sign of stupidity.

The choice of color should also consider whether or not you will wear the shirt in front of cameras. Some colors do not look good on videos, even if, in the mirror, they seem like great choices.

Se você sempre opta por cores neutras, isso demonstra insegurança e falta de personalidade. Sua imagem pessoal é uma ferramenta de comunicação não verbal e, para desenvolver um estilo relevante é preciso ter a orientação de uma profissional experiente como eu e que entende profundamente o estilo pessoal como ferramenta de comunicação não verbal, te ajudar a traduzir o melhor de sua personalidade em sua aparência.

A camisa é uma peça usada perto do rosto e tem um forte impacto em sua imagem pessoal, pois a escolha errada de cores pode te dar um ar abatido, entre outras opções igualmente negativas. A escolha da cor também deve considerar se você vai vestir a camisa diante de câmeras ou não. Algumas cores não ficam bem em vídeos, mesmo que, no espelho, pareçam ótimas escolhas.

🌎 Professionalism and personal style

Let's talk about professionalism and personal style.

I'm Nycka Nunes, a personal style consultant and visual artist. I've been working in the fashion industry since 1981, and I'm one of the most experienced stylists in the world. In this blog, I talk about personal style, personal branding, and related topics. I work with my own methodology and serve clients from all over the world, although I don't travel to countries where my safety could be at risk, such as countries at war or countries with Islamic regimes.

I've already explained what personal style is in the previous text, published yesterday. Now, I'm going to tell you some reasons why you think you're demonstrating professionalism by following certain rules and may be demonstrating the opposite, if you're interested in leadership roles. Yes, I'm going to limit the explanation to leadership roles, because in most cases I'm too expensive for professionals without that level of expertise.

When you follow generic rules about how to have a professional image on LinkedIn or anywhere, you're demonstrating that you're a good employee, a good follower of orders, not a leader. To demonstrate leadership, you need to have adequate professional guidance, so that your personal image reflects your best qualities as a leader. And you won't achieve this with just any navy blue suit. Dressing like everyone else only shows that you are a cheap commodity, a professional without an identity, easily replaceable. Are you? If you are, you can stop reading this text. If you are not, or if you want to be a prominent professional, you must understand that general rules are for employees, not for leaders. And this does not mean that you should dress however you want. Personal image is a nonverbal communication tool and, as such, you need guidance from someone who is fluent in that language to know what to do to communicate what you want. In the same way that you need a translator to help you say something in a language that you do not master.

Professionalism also means knowing how to value the work of others, and asking professionals to guide you on topics that you do not understand. Unless you want to study hard to find out what they know, and that is usually the slowest way to achieve your goal.

🇧🇷 Profissionalismo e estilo pessoal

Vamos falar de profissionalismo e estilo pessoal.

Eu sou Nycka Nunes, sou consultora de estilo pessoal e artista visual. Trabalho na indústria de moda desde 1981, sou uma das stylists mais experientes do mundo. Neste blog falo de estilo pessoal, marca pessoal e temas relacionados. Trabalho com metodologia própria e atendo clientes de todo o mundo, embora não viaje para países onde minha segurança pode estar em risco, como países em guerra ou países de regime islâmico.

Já expliquei o que é estilo pessoal no texto anterior, publicado ontem. Agora, vou te falar de alguns motivos pelos quais você acha que está demonstrando profissionalismo ao seguir certas regras e pode estar demonstrando o oposto, se seu interesse é em papéis de liderança. Sim, vou limitar a explicação a papéis de liderança, porque na maioria dos casos sou cara demais para profissionais sem esse nível de expertise.

Quando você segue regras genéricas sobre como ter uma imagem profissional no LinkedIn ou em qualquer lugar, você está demonstrando ser um bom empregado, um bom seguidor de ordens, não um líder. Para demonstrar liderança, você precisa ter orientação profissional adequada, para que sua imagem pessoal demonstre suas melhores qualidades como líder. E você não vai conseguir isso com um terno azul marinho qualquer. Vestir-se como todo mundo apenas demonstra que você é um commodity barato, um profissional sem identidade, facilmente substituível. Você é? Então pode parar de ler este texto. Se não é, ou quer ser um profissional de destaque, tem de entender que regras gerais são para empregados, não para líderes. E isso não significa que você deva vestir-se como bem entender. A imagem pessoal é uma ferramenta de comunicação não verbal e, como tal, você precisa de orientação de quem é fluente nessa linguagem para saber o que fazer para comunicar o que deseja. Da mesma forma que precisa de um tradutor para te ajudar a dizer algo numa língua que você não domina.

Profissionalismo é, também, saber dar valor ao trabalho dos outros, e recorrer a profissionais para te orientar sobre temas que não domina. A menos que queira estudar muito para saber o que eles sabem, e isso geralmente é a via mais lenta de atingir o objetivo.

I am Nycka Nunes, one of the most experienced stylists in the world. I have been working in the fashion industry since 1981. I have my own work methodology. In this blog, I talk about personal style, personal branding and related topics. I also work as a visual artist, and this is my main role.

The term style is very trivialized because people confuse the names that journalists and bloggers use to describe collections with personal style. I have already explained this confusion in a previous text.

Having style is knowing how to use your appearance as a non-verbal communication tool. If people criticize you and you feel uncomfortable, you are not using this tool properly. If you are not bothered, but you bother others, due to a total lack of aesthetic sense, this is called low self-esteem, which is also a form of not having personal style.

Personal style requires self-knowledge and self-esteem.

Having personal style is VERY different and many levels above knowing how to dress without making gross mistakes.

Knowing how to dress according to your body type is the least that anyone with a minimum sense of aesthetics should know, because this is information that is freely spread on the internet, even though there is a lot of misinformation. Having a mirror at home (or using the mirror in the dressing room in stores) and being able to judge your own appearance as if you were someone else looking at you already helps you avoid making big mistakes in this regard. And even so, this is far from having style.

Following generic tips is far from having style. Following fashion trends takes you even further away from having style. Having personal style is expressing the best of your personality, and dressing strategically and intentionally. Most people can only have true style by hiring an experienced stylist like me. That's because you need someone fluent in the rules of nonverbal communication to achieve this result. And, of course, you need to have healthy self-esteem to do this. People who don't have good self-esteem will complain about the prices and will find a thousand excuses not to hire my work, even though I am more experienced than most style advisors. My focus is on showcasing my clients' personalities with good taste and creativity, even when they work in activities where the dress code is usually quite conservative. My biggest pleasure is to help clients who are self confident enough to dress bold like some celebrities do, but according to their own reality.
